Robert Griffing studied illustration and design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and went on to enjoy a thirty-year career in advertising. His lifelong interest in Native American and colonial history was the result of growing up in western Pennsylvania, where many eighteenth-century historical events took place. He still resides there with his wife, Justine.
Today Griffing paints the Native Americans of the Great Lakes and Eastern Woodlands, portraying how they dealt with European contact. His work has been used in educational packages and a number of TV historical documentaries, as well as on the covers of national magazines. He has the support of several Native American groups, and has donated images for use as murals and framed prints for display in their museums and cultural centers. Two of his large paintings depicting the opening moments of the Battle of Fort Necessity, commissioned by the National Park Service, will be part of a cyclorama in the new visitor's center at the battlefield site. The historical accuracy of his paintings earned him the prestigious John Forbes Medal, presented by the Fort Pitt Association and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
Griffing exhibits at all the Settlers West shows, including the Coeur d'Alene Art Auction in Reno; the Western Visions Miniatures Show in Jackson, Wyoming; the Autry National Center's Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale in Los Angeles; and the Renaissance Sale at Morris and Whiteside Galleries in Hilton Head, South Carolina. More details about the artist and his paintings are in the book The Art of Robert Griffing, which has sold more than 8,000 copies worldwide. Paramount Press, Inc. published the book and produces prints of his work.
